Reports and eyewitness letters talk about opposing armies playing football in no-man land.  Men, only hours before willing to kill one another playing together and enjoying the company of their fellow humans.

Harun al-Rashid and King Charlemagne were two kind of important people. A gift from one to the other?  A chessboard.
